Kenya Power alarmed at transformer vandalism

Njoroge said as a result of vandalism, the economy was losing over Sh3 billion due to power interruptions/CFM

OL-KALOU, Kenya, Jun 13 – Kenya Power Managing Director Joseph Njoroge has decried the raising cases of vandalism on power transformers and other equipment, which have cost the company close to Sh1 billion so far.

Njoroge said as a result of vandalism, the economy was losing over Sh3 billion due to power interruptions.

He said that Kenya Power had petitioned the government to classify vandalism as an economic sabotage where culprits are sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Kenya Power boss made the remarks on Wednesday after commissioning the newly set up Ol-Kalou Kenya Power sub-station to help supply more power to the local communities and the neighbouring areas.

The sub-station together with another one established at Matundura area in Engineer Township of Nyandarua South district cost the Kenya Power Sh231 million and are aimed to relieve the overstretched feeders that were serving the surrounding areas from Lanet, Nyahururu and Gilgil stations.

Njoroge noted that the new facilities will help in the improvement of quality of power supply in the agriculture rich Nyandarua County including the numerous horticultural and flower farms.

He said Kenya Power aims to accelerate electricity supply to more than 50 percent of Kenyans which is in line with the country’s Vision 2030 noting that electricity was a backbone of the economy and key enabler of development.

He further said that the power firm has initiated preparation of a master plan that will serve as the roadmap for implementing the company’s power distribution projects targeting all the 47 counties.

The master plan, he added, will provide recommendations of optimising the operational efficiency of the distribution system, minimise losses and accelerate customer connections.
