A closer look at the new super-charged MacBook Pro

Apple chose its World Wide Developer Conference to release a raft of new and revamped products including iOS 6, cross-platform iMessage, Siri updates and a new MacBook Pro.

The Next Gen MacBook Pro has the highest resolution screen on a laptop and is as light as air. The new MacBook Pro dwarfs its immediate predecessor in almost all scores. It has four times the number of pixels as the previous model at 2800 x 1800 resolution on 15.4 screen.

The clear winners of the new model will be designers and video editors who will also appreciate Intel’s fastest processors – Quad-Core 2.7 Ghz of processing with possibility to turbo boost up to 3.7 GHz.

It seems Apple is phasing out the 17” MacBook as only the 13.3” and 15.4” sizes were given special upgrades announced at yesterdays WWDC in San.

The new model is also the first of the MacBook’s to have Retina Display – referring to the very high resolution that the eye cannot notice pixilation.

The laptop has 8GB of 1600MHz RAM (upgradeable to up to 16GB), a GeForce GT 650M graphics processor with 1GB of VRAM (good news to gamers), and 256GB of flash storage.

All these powerful features packed into a light casing weighing slightly over 2kgs. The 15” MacBook with Retina weighs the same as the MacBook 13” and has 0.71 inch thickness when closed. The difference is that the MacBook Retina has uniform thickness unlike the previous versions which are wedged shaped.

The new Apple laptop has seven hours of battery and 30 days of standby. It also has 802.11n Wi-fi, Bluetooth 4.0, SD-card slot, HDMI out, 2/3 USB ports, two thunderbolt ports and a headphone port.

Of course to acquire such a piece of engineering will not be cheap. The new MacBook Pro with Retina will retail at $2,200 (Sh187,000).
