Spot Kick, a football mobile app, won the inaugural Ignite Hackathon held this past weekend at the Startup Garage along Ngong Road.
The winning app is a product of Steven Mugo, who walked away with a cash prize of $5,000 (400,000). Ignite Hackathon was sponsored by Nokia, eMobilis and CapitalFM and aimed at creating mass apps for the S40 Nokia platform.
The two-day event saw over 80 developers, mainly University students, set camp at the Startup Garage. Judges assessed the apps based on the mass applicability, business viability, user interface and deployment on the S40 platform.
Spot Kick is a simple mobile game that allows players to shoot or play goal keeper. The app can also be played by multi-players and can be extended on PC’s.
“The greatest challenge was to develop the multiplayer aspect,” says Steven.
BriteSkills took the first runner’s up position taking home $3,000 (Sh240,000). Joe Okatch, Asmeret Gebre and Victor Karanja developed the app from the BriteSkills software that facilitates learning and teaching online.
Allan Onchuru and Dickson Ng’ang’a won the top media app, sponsored by CapitalFM. The two won a contract to develop the app further for CapitalFM.
In addition to the cash prizes, Nokia will help the developers publish their apps on the Nokia Store.
