Kenyan app developer wins Sh8.3 million for AroundMe

Kenyan mobile developer James Mwai has won Sh8.3 million for his mobile app ‘AroundMe’ at the just concluded Nokia Create for Millions challenge.

Mwai’s app beat ten other finalists in the ‘In the Know’ category, and hundreds of others that had entered the contest. AroundMe also beat other finalists to win Best Overall Series 40 Web App, tying with Colombia’s David Bello’s app, HeatMap.

AroundMe helps users to quickly find important businesses and services in their vicinity or any other location with a Nokia phone. The app is one of the most popular Kenyan apps in the Nokia Store with over 250,000 downloads.

In addition to the prize money, the winning apps will be promoted globally in various Nokia-owned channels. The developers will also receive a free user experience consultation from Nokia.

The winners in the four categories; Access to Knowledge, Emotional Closeness, Fun and Games and In the Know, were announced during the Mobile World Congress 2012, in Barcelona, Spain.
