Annual Google Science Fair kicks off

Kenyan students have an opportunity to participate in a global science competition organized by Google and its partners. The Google Science fair is for students aged between 13 and 18 years and Kenyan students will join thousands of other students in submitting their science projects on an online platform.

“This year’s fair will be even more global than the last. We will be recognizing 90 regional finalists. 30 from the Americas, 30 from the Asia Pacific and 30 from Europe/Middle East/ Africa,” said a statement from Google.

The 90 finalists will be announced on 1st of April, after which the judges will choose the top 15, who will be flown to Google headquarters in California.

The entrants are divided by age; 13-14, 15-16, and 17-18. Students can enter any science project or idea that aims to address issues in their society, either individually or in a group of a maximum number of three people. The competition requires students to pose a question, develop a hypothesis and conduct science experiment to test it.

Last year’s winner, Harine Ravichandran from India, submitted an idea that would provide stable power in remote villages.

The science fair will be accepting submissions until Sunday, April 1. Finalists have a chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship from Google, a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands or an internship at Google or any of the partners.

Winners of last year’s fair became over-night superstars, appearing in several TV and Radio shows, magazines and some even met with President Obama.
