2011 Stanchart marathon set for October 30

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 5- This year’s Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has been set for October 30.

Standard Chartered Bank, the title sponsors of the annual Nairobi Marathon launched this year’s edition themed “Share the Vision” on Monday as it seeks to reinforce its brand promise of “Here for Good.”

Speaking during the launch, the Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Richard Etemesi said this year’s marathon is a memorable occasion as the bank is also celebrating 100 years since it opened its two branches in Kenya, Treasury square in Mombasa and Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi.

“In partnership with Athletics Kenya and with the support of our co-sponsors and staff, we have been able to consistently put up a creatively modelled international marathon that has raised the profile of Kenya; provided opportunity for budding local athletes, boosted tourism, raised funds for the needy in our community and you will agree with me, has brought some fun into our lives by creating an interactive and social community event.”

The bank is sponsoring the event for the ninth year running and will this year inject Sh95 million into the event which will be flagged off at the Nyayo National stadium.

Mr Etemesi added that last year’s edition attracted over 14,000 participants from 53 countries and helped raise a total of Sh16 million.

This year’s ambition is to raise over Sh20 million which will go towards preventing avoidable blindness and restore sight to children below nine years.

“This year as usual, we promise all participants a well organised event that will meet their expectations and therefore urge everyone, individual and corporate to register and be part of this event,” said Mr Etemesi.

The colourful launch event was attended by personalities from the co-sponsors, sports fraternity, ‘seeing is believing’ beneficiaries.
