LG goes head to head with the iPad

February 4, 2011 – LG Electronics is not to be left behind and has unveiled plans to go head to head with Apple’s iPad by launching its first tablet computer next month.

LG’s ‘G-slate’ is among the first tablet models to run on the “Honeycomb” operating system, which is Google’s latest generation of Android platforms designed for mobile devices with large screens.

The G-slate features a 8.9-inch screen, smaller than the iPad’s nearly 10-inch display but larger than the seven-inch screen of Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Tab.

LG has not given it a price tag yet according to George Mudhune, who does LG’s Corporate Brand Marketing in Kenya.

“We shall know the price when it is released, and we will also have an indication then on when it will be locally available.”

Mudhune also told Capital Lifestyle that once G-slate is out they will let consumers ‘judge the difference’.

“It will not only have the capability to display 3-D images (using glasses), but a dual-camera setup on the backside that can take 3-D images as well, which naturally are viewable on the device. The cameras can take 3-D pictures as well as 1080p high-definition video in 3-D. The 9-inch tablet will also shunt 1080p content to other devices over an HDMI connection.
Inside will be a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 32GB of storage, Wi-Fi, 3.5G and a front-facing camera for video chat,” he said.

According to AFP LG’s handset business took a direct hit from smartphone offerings by global rivals and after posting a fourth quarter net loss of $229 million, it is now counting on new smartphones and tablet computers to drive sales.

The iPad went on sale in South Korea last November, three weeks after Samsung launched its rival tablet computer in its home market.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is more expensive than the cheapest iPad, which costs between $499 and $829.
