KENYA, Nyeri Dec 7 – President Mwai Kibaki has called on contractors undertaking government tenders to ensure they complete their projects on time to ensure the economy reaps benefits of such initiatives immediately.
Speaking in Karatina while inaugurating the upgraded Karatina-Karandi-Itundu-Unjiru-Ngandu road, President Kibaki told contractors that Kenyans expect them to complete awarded projects on time.
“It is irrelevant to display paper designs and other phantom activities without any meaningful and corresponding progress of the development projects on the ground,” observed the President.
Later the President officially inaugurated the Nyeri Water Supply project at Kamakwa shopping centre.
Addressing the same forum assistant Minister for Roads Dr Wilfred Machage announced that his ministry had launched a crackdown on non-performing contractors who unnecessarily delayed completion of development projects.
He urged the President to intervene against proposals to slash the ministry’s budget.
“The road network needs urgent rehabilitation to ensure smooth transportation of people and goods,” Dr Machage said.
Meanwhile, the President said his government was determined to empower Kenyans by implementing equitable distribution of national resources and development projects.
“Every region shall have its fair share of development and Kenyans must redouble their efforts to create a prosperous nation,’ said the President.
He at the same time urged leaders at all levels to concentrate on development and stop divisive politics that distract the public from resolving pertinent issues that touch their lives.
He observed: “Time for politicking is over. This is the time to serve Kenyans because elections were concluded until four years are over. Again all parties united to form the Grand Coalition Government.”
