NAIROBI, November 14 – Mobile phone service provider Safaricom has unveiled fixed data communication services which will enable high-speed internet and data access for corporate and business customers.
The firm’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Joseph says through its subsidiary One Communications Limited where it owns a 51 percent stake, Safaricom will compliment its mobile solutions offering thus enabling efficient and effective business communications.
“The services will primarily be marketed to the corporate and business segments through our new unit dubbed ‘Safaricom Business’ and it will strengthen our position to deliver end to end data and voice communication services,” he explained.
The connectivity service for technology-conscious corporate and business customers will be rolled out under the brand name ONEConnect, Mr Joseph said, adding that they have more than one million mobile data subscribers on the ‘edge’ and 3G platforms.
He pointed out that the communication data products and services have great potential as the penetration of internet services in the country is less than five percent while robust business connectivity options are mostly limited to the main urban centers of Nairobi and Mombasa.
The CEO revealed that in the next six to 12 months, Safaricom plans to roll out high speed mobile internet services over 3G and fixed data connectivity for business over Wi-Max in all major urban centres to increase penetration and reach out to more Kenyans.
“Safaricom has over the year built internal capacity to deliver innovative and complex products aimed at satisfying customer needs,” Mr Joseph boasted.
He pledged that in addition to securing the necessary technology and platform to deliver broader services, Safaricom would continue to enhance its skills base both on commercial and technical spheres, to deliver world class services and provide support to customers.
