KR mulls golf city in Nairobi

NAIROBI, November 18 – Kenya Railways has announced an ambitious Sh23.5 billion master planned golf resort city near Nairobi’s Uhuru Park.

The project dubbed “Golf City” will be constructed in a sprawling 63-hectare land owned by Kenya Railways (KR) that is located between Haille Sellasie Avenue, Uhuru Highway and Bunyara road.

“The project will be completed over a maximum of six years from grant of the lease,” KR Managing Director Mr Nduva Muli said.

He said the investors would be required to commence development within a year of grant of the lease.

“The project will see the construction of a 5-star hotel, a modern 4-star hotel with state of the art conference facilities, exclusive cottages, an international quality 9-hole golf course and a huge shopping mall with sufficient parking lots,” he said.

Mr Muli said the golf city would be serviced by a new metropolitan railway line connecting to JKIA and the city centre.

“The special conditions contract stipulates that investors lease the land for a period of 60 years renewable,” he said.

The investors are however required to ensure that the golf course remains operational with minimal closures to undertake improvements.

“Bidders will be invited to an open forum on January 15 2009 to seek clarification on the tender,” he said.

The Kenya Railways Golf Club located half a kilometre from the city centre was established in 1922 as a private club for the Railway staff.
