LONDON, England, July 30 – Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand has been charged by the Football Association in relation to comments made on Twitter in the wake of the recent John Terry racism trial.

Following the trial, in which Chelsea and England defender Terry was acquitted of racially abusing Ferdinand’s younger brother Anton, Rio responded to a Tweet that described Chelsea defender and defence witness Ashley Cole as a “choc-ice”.

The term is commonly understood to mean “black on the outside, white on the inside”.

It was a reference to Cole’s testimony in court, in which he said he never heard Terry make a racist remark to Anton Ferdinand during the match in question, between Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea, at Loftus Road last October.

“The FA has today charged Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand with improper conduct in relation to comments posted on Twitter,” said an FA statement.

“The allegation is that the player acted in a way which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute by making comments which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race.”

Terry was found not guilty earlier this month after a five-day trial at Westminster Magistrates Court but the FA has since charged Terry in relation to the same case.

I hate racism from any quarter,
Do you think double standards are being applied?
Saurez stated he made an innocent remark ( a term of affection in his country) to Evra and probably would have got away with it if he had not admitted what he said (hardly the actions of a guilty person) but he is villified by everyone, If he is a racist why was he not charged in a court of law.
John Terry was caught on camera and was found not guilty in court but now faces an FA charge.
Rio Ferdinand agrees with a racist remark against another black man and more than that he laughs at it. It was written by him, why is he not being charged in a court of law, i hope he gets a lengthy ban and apologises.
Daley Thompson made a racist remark about the Irish live on BBC tv, why has he not been charged in a court of law?
If we are going to have a world of equals free from racism then all have to be punished the same.
Will sir Alex Ferguson be as critical of Rio Ferdinand as he has been of Suarez, if he isnt then he is a hypocrite and will be exposed as using the Suarez incident as a way to try and destroy a good player from an opposing team. He is as guilty
