CAIRO, Egypt, Jan 5 – Egypt coach Hector Cuper has trimmed down the provisional squad of 27 to a final 23 which will do duty at the African Cup of Nations.
The tournament takes place from 14 January to 5 February and will see the seven-time champions competing once more after they failed to qualify for the last three editions of the continental showpiece.
The north Africans are in Group D, which also includes Ghana, Mali and Uganda.
The four players cut from the squad by the Argentina-born coach Cuper are defender Hamada Tolba and midfielder Ahmed Gomaa (both of the Masry club), Zamalek midfielder Mohamed Ibrahim and Ismaily goalkeeper Mohamed Awad.
All of the Pharaohs’ big names are in the squad, including Mohamed Salah, Ahmed Elmohamady and Mohamed Elneny.
The Egyptians are currently in camp and are set to take on Tunisia in a friendly on Sunday at the Cairo International Stadium.
