NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7 – Kenya Cup side Nondescripts will hold a touch rugby tournament in honor of departed centre Ogeto Gecheo who passed away on Tuesday in Nairobi.

The touch rugby will be held on Friday December 9, 2016 at Jamhuri ASK Showground off Ngong Road which is Nondescript’s home from to 2pm and it’s open to all rugby lovers.

Thereafter Nondies will have tributes from family, friends and players. The event will also double up as a fundraiser to help the family meet the send-off costs.

Gecheo will be buried on Tuesday December 13, 2016 in Njoro, Nakuru County and as plans for the burial are finalized, friends and family are meeting at the Gecheo residence in Loresho daily from 6PM. Mpesa donations can be sent through 0727748290.

“The function will be opened to all rugby clubs in Kenya. We are planning to start at around 2pm and then afterwards we will have tributes from family, friends, players and people who knew Ogeto Gecheo. It will also sum up as a contribution where guys will contribute towards his funeral expenses,” Nondescripts Team Manager Kevin Were said.

Ogeto got injured during a Kenya Cup tie against Strathmore Leos on December 3 at Madaraka. While making a tackle, a disc slipped in his neck leading to spinal damage with the injury causing numbness from his neck down.

‘OG’ as he was referred by his peers and team-mates was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital and was operated on in the early hours of Sunday where plates were affixed on his vertebral column.

The procedure was largely successful with OG regaining sensation and motion in his upper body.

He was scheduled to begin physiotherapy immediately on advice from the surgical team at the hospital but sadly he developed breathing difficulty early Tuesday morning and was pronounced dead at about 3am.
