HOMABAY, Kenya, July 24 – Kenya Prisons volleyball clubs, beat Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Pipeline in the men and women finals respectively to lift the Homa Bay County Government Open Volleyball Tournament Sunday.

Prisons ladies completed a double over arch rivals Kenya Pipeline whom they had beaten by straight sets on Friday but this time round they were forced to work a little harder after they found themselves a set down only to turn the table with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-11).

Their male colleagues were also stretched to four sets thriller by the Mombasa based side KPA but they came out victors thanks to 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 14-25, 25-22) sets in the other final.

This was a rather positive result for the Prisons clubs who posted mixed result during the league matches Friday.

Prisons (women), who last won the league title in 2013 had beaten back-to-back national champions Kenya Pipeline by straights sets in a league match while their male colleague were subjected to their first loss by Nairobi Water.

This is the third time that Prisons has beaten Pipeline this season. The first time they achieved that fete was last May during the AMACO International Volleyball Tournament in Eldoret under assistant coach Josp Barasa.

Pipeline, who had sailed to the final after beating KCB 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-25), opened the game on a high after snatching the opening set 25-22 but were complacent in the subsequent sets which saw Prisons come back to complete a double over them in a weekend. Prisons knocked out Nairobi Water (25-19, 25-15, 25-15) in the other semis.

Meanwhile, the warders got the best revenge against Water whom they eliminated in the quarters before going all the way to win the final after seeing off reigning men’s champions General Service Unit (GSU) in a marathon semi final with 3-2 (19-25, 25-11, 17-25, 25-23, 17-15) set scores.

KPA showed good performance when they came from  a set down to knock out  Co-operative Bank  3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-13) to sail to the final.
