LONDON, May 10 – Departing Chelsea captain John Terry has reportedly rented out Stamford Bridge so that he can enjoy a playing farewell after he was ruled out of the Blues’ final two games of the season due to suspension.

Terry was sent off in Chelsea’s weekend defeat to Sunderland, and while his two yellow cards would normally have resulted in a one-match ban, as it was his second red of the season, he’ll be sidelined for two matches.

With the chances of the defender being handed a new contract dwindling by the day, it seems probable that Terry has played his last game for the Blues, bringing the curtain down on a spell with the London club that began in 1995 when Terry was aged just 14.

But a petulant dismissal during an ignominious defeat to a relegation-threatened rival is hardly a fitting swansong to his playing career, and according to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Terry will rent out Stamford Bridge in order to have a proper farewell.

“Terry will still play on the Stamford Bridge turf for one last time after hiring the stadium for a specially arranged match with his closest friends next Monday – the day after Chelsea’s final game of the season against Leicester City,” Law wrote.

“Hiring Stamford Bridge for a game usually costs £22,000, but Chelsea have agreed to give Terry the club’s stadium for free as part of a series of gestures that will be made to the 35-year-old.

“Together with being able to play on the pitch, the Stamford Bridge package that Terry has taken up for his big goodbye includes dressing rooms, match officials, use of the dug-outs, access to stadium screens and public address system, and a barbecue.”
