LIVERPOOL, April 23- Liverpool centre back Mamadou Sakho has been suspended after failing a drug test.

The Anfield club released the following statement:

‘Yesterday, Friday 22nd April 2016, a formal communication was received from UEFA stating that they are investigating a possible anti-doping rule violation by Mamadou Sakho.

‘The player will respond to UEFA on the matter. The player is currently not subject to any playing suspension. However, the club, in consultation with the player, has decided that while this process is followed the player will not be available for selection for matches.’

Mamadou Sakho has recently impressed in the Liverpool defence and has made 34 appearances for the Anfield club this season. The France international joined Liverpool from Paris St-Germain in 2013.

French publication RMC Sport have revealed that the defender has been taking a ‘fat burning’ drug in a personal capacity that has broken stringent regulations.

The Reds are now investigating the incident and the 26-year-old will remain suspended for matches until club officials and UEFA are satisfied.

Sakho is keen to prove that this has been an accident and is generally considered a consummate professional by the club.

It is thought that the France international was unaware that the substance was banned, and is now keen to prove that he was acting in good faith.

This news will be a major blow to the centre-back, who had just been hitting his best form with the Merseyside outfit.

He had played a key part in the now famous 4-3 win over Borussia Dortmund, and also scored in the 4-0 thrashing of Everton this week. This will at the very least rule the defender out of Liverpool’s game with Newcastle United on Saturday.
