NAIROBI, February 10 – Outgoing Football Kenya Federation boss Sam Nyamweya has stepped down from the national elections presidential race, leaving three candidates.
Nyamweya who was elected in November 2011, announced on Wednesday when giving his exit speech, minutes before 77 delegates went to the ballot to elect new office bearers.
“I truly love everybody here and the institution. My decision comes out of love not hate nor pressure. Friends I care very much for FKF and football as well as its interest, which I hold very dear, that further contributed to this decision. I would like to thank those who have constructively supported me and with steadfast loyalty who have done so much for the game that we all love.”
“I dedicate the many years of football service to my lovely wife who has been with me throughout this journey and my children who have generously shared attention with the burden of responsibility to serve Kenyan football – these are the heroes that deserve your appreciation and tribute,” Nyamweya declared.
He added, “As I say goodbye to active football administration, may I remind you that farewells are not forever, nor are they the end but are simple words to mark the beginning of a transition to other things,” the 62-year-old said.
Nyamweya’s withdrawal follows that of businessman Gor Semelang’o and Semi Aina who opted out, leaving three contestants in the race.
Kariobangi Sharks chairman, Nick Mwendwa is favourite to succeed Nyamweya but he faces stiff competition from KPL and Gor Mahia chairman, Ambrose Rachier as well as former Harambee Stars midfielder Sammy Shollei.
A delegation from FIFA led by former CECAFA president, Leodenga Tenga, the world football governing body Head of Associations, Primo Corvaro and FIFA Southern and Eastern Region Development Officer, Ashford Mammelodi observed the polls that are being conducted at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium.
At the Special General Meeting, the delegates agreed to transit the federation into Sports Acts as required by the law.
However, the newly elected officials will have a meeting with FIFA under the watch of Corvaro to align the federation constitution with FIFA statutes and regulations.
The delegates will elect new president, vice president and National Executive Committee members.
The delegates are drawn from 16 KPL clubs, six FKF-PL clubs, six National Super League clubs, two members each from 20 branches as well as a representative from coaches, players and referee Welfare Associations.
Nyamweya came back to football four years ago after previously serving in the federation as secretary general when it was known as Kenya Football Federation.
