NAIROBI, December 4- Arsenal Legend Robert Pires is in the country for a three-day day visit as part of the Barclays Premier League promotion dubbed Switch to Better.

The former France international who recently signed played for India Super League side, FC Goa, shot to fame among legions of local BPL fans as part of the conquering Arsene Wenger’s team that won two league and three FA Cup titles between 2002 to 04.

“This is my first time in Kenya and the warmth with which I have been received has only served to reinforce the wonderful things I have heard about this beautiful country.

“I am looking forward to interacting with more people in the next couple of days,” Pires, 42, who won the 1998 Fifa World Cup and Euro 2000 with France said upon arrival on Thursday night.

During his stay, Pires will host 200 lucky customers to an exclusive viewing of the Arsenal versus Sunderland match on Saturday evening at a city hotel.

He will also spend time with the families of four lucky customers and kit them out in their favourite teams’ original gear.

On Saturday, Pires will join the bank for the launch of the Sport for Kenyan Youth Employment programme.

The bank is partnering with the International Youth Foundation for the implementation of the Sh47.9 million programme.

The programme, which will be implemented through the Mathare Youth Sports Association, will provide the youth living in the informal settlement and its environs with skills, confidence and experience they need to secure economic and social independence.

“We invited Pires to Kenya as part of our Switch to Better Campaign. As you all know, Barclays has for the last 15 years been the main sponsor of the world’s most renowned premiership: the Barclays Premier League.

“This sponsorship has provided us with a great platform to reward and delight some of our loyal customers operating as we do in a football loving nation with great entertainment,” Barclays Bank of Kenya Managing Director, Jeremy Awori, said.

Barclays, a global supporter of football and title sponsor of the Barclays Premier League, utilises the sponsorship to reward their customers by offering them once in a lifetime football experiences.

In addition to offering customers the chance to meet Pires, Barclays is offering new and existing clients the chance to win an exclusive experience for them and a partner to watch a league game live in the United Kingdom.

Pires leaves on Sunday.
