NAIROBI, October 15 – Gor Mahia striker Meddie Kagere became the second SportPesa Premier League star to bag both the fans and journalist monthly awards.

The Ugandan-born former Rwandese international tallied 1689 votes in a ten-day poll conducted on soka.co.ke to beat AFC Leopards Lamine Diallo (431), Nakuru All Stars youngster Boniface Akenga (118), Ulinzi Stars custodian Francis Ochieng (59) and Chemelil Sugar FC striker Meshack Karani (39).

Kagere who was instrumental in K’Ogalo’s 4-2 GOTv Shield victory over lower division side, Palos FC on Wednesday, thanked his teammates and the fans that voted, pointing out that he wasn’t expecting to win the award since he’s a foreign player.

He follows teammate Ali Abondo who collected both awards in March when they were launched to run in parallel at the beginning of this season.

“I thank God for this award though I wasn’t really hoping to win it. As a foreign player who have to work harder and that is what I have been doing,” Kagere said shortly after he was presented with the award,

“I’m a very ambitious man and I always focus on the future. Better things are on the way for me. I joined Gor from a European team because I wanted to learn more. The SPL is tough and you have to work harder since it’s very physical,” the striker with 13 league goals.

“Awards open doors for players and I urge the rest to continue pushing and all will be well,” he added.

Kagere is fifth winner of the fans accolade with Paul Kiongera, Jacob Keli, Victor Ali Abondo and Bernard Mangoli having won it in the past.

He received Sh10,000 and a plaque for this accolade having been named the September winner of the SportPesa/SJAK Player of the Month on Tuesday.

“Winning the Premier League unbeaten was my biggest achievement and I’m hoping we will not lose the remaining two games,” Kagere, 29, who is fired up to win the treble with Gor said.
