Appeal Terry red card says Mourinho

TERRY RED CARD

WEST BROMWICH, August 24 – Manager Jose Mourinho believes Chelsea should contest captain John Terry’s red card from the 3-2 win at West Brom but admits an appeal would probably be “a waste of time”.

Mourinho appeared to be unhappy with the dismissal of his skipper for a foul on Salomon Rondon nine minutes into the second half at The Hawthorns a week after he was substituted at Manchester City.

But Mourinho hinted an appeal to the FA to have the sending-off overturned was unlikely after several failed appeals by Chelsea in the last year.

“Normally, it’s a waste of time for us,” said Mourinho. “I think we should (appeal), but normally it’s a waste of time.

“Remember (Nemanja) Matic against Burnley last year, Diego Costa against Liverpool, (Thibaut) Courtois (against Swansea)?

“It’s a waste of time.”

Terry’s dismissal by referee Mark Clattenburg meant the 34-year-old had failed to complete successive Premier League games for the first time in 17 years and 462 appearances.

He was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity when he was adjudged to have dragged down Albion’s record signing Rondon on 54 minutes.

“I don’t want to make (anything of it),” said Mourinho.

“To speak about that I have to speak about many other things in the game, some things you can see, others we can see.

“It’s a ball into space behind the full-back. The full-back is pressing high. The striker makes the movement and then Mr Clattenburg decides a red card.”

Mourinho saw new signing Pedro mark his debut with the opening goal as Chelsea led 2-0 and 3-1 and then held on for their first win of the season following the loss of Terry.

Pedro is believed to have cost the Premier League champions around £21 million (28.9 million euros) but Mourinho was delighted with the Spaniard’s first Premier League performance.

“He is a very good player,” said Mourinho. “There is always a question mark because how many top players come to England and don’t perform immediately, and then people wonder if he’s the right player, can he adapt, was he a good or bad buy?

“There are examples in our club, and in lots of clubs. So it’s very nice for him to come and perform straight away as he did.”

Diego Costa and Cesar Azpilicueta were also on target for the Blues while James Morrison scored both West Brom goals and had a penalty saved by Courtois at 0-0.

West Brom coach Tony Pulis criticised his side’s defending after they conceded three times for the second successive home game following defeat in the opening fixture against Manchester City.

But he praised their attacking play without star striker Saido Berahino, who he left out following a failed bid from Tottenham Hotspur last week.

“The transfer window is absolutely ridiculous,” said Pulis.

“For it to be going through into the start of the season, I find just ridiculous.

“Everybody should be talking about the game and this wouldn’t be an issue or a problem.

“Saido’s a great lad but this can be disruptive and it has been disruptive. I had a good chat with him.

“He’s fine, there are no problems with him, but it’s the transfer window that causes the problem. There are still seven days to go. He’s a young lad and he needs to be protected.

“There is a lot of stuff going on his mind and a lot of people saying things and doing things. The kid shouldn’t have this problem. Nobody should. The season has started.”
