Sserunkuma snubs Leopards for Gor return

GOR-KISUMUNAIROBI, May 14 – Ugandan international striker, Dan Sserunkuma is set for a prodigal return to Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia after spurning advances from bitter rivals AFC Leopards in the race for his signature.

Sserunkuma placed KPL on red alert when he severed his contract with Tanzanian giants; Simba SC with Leopards and an unnamed Zambian club joining Gor in scrambling to sign him in a tussle K’Ogalo have apparently won according to reports on Thursday.

Club secretary, Ronald Ngala told Capital Sport they have agreed on a memorandum of understanding for the striker to rejoin the side he top scored for last season with 17 goals when the June KPL transfer window opens.

“Sserunkuma is yet to make up his mind on which team he will join. He just became a free agent the other day so we will only be involved if he shows interest.

“It will depend on the technical bench if they are interested in his services but if you ask me I will welcome him back,” Ngala told in stating the prodigal return was not a done deal yet.

Dreadlocked Uganda Cranes forward inspired K’Ogalo to back to back national titles has reportedly agreed to an initial six month deal with the champions.

It remains to be seen how head coach Frank Nuttall will reintegrate Sserunkuma to his squad that remains unbeaten 11 games to the season with an eight point cushion at the top having managed to wean the team out of dependency on his impressive strike rate.

Lanky student Michael Olunga has blossomed with seven goals so far in a forward partnership with Rwandan Meddie Kagere with Ali Abondo also weighing in with the goals from midfield to fill in the void.

Sserunkuma departed Gor to join Simba for a one-year deal, but the deal went sour after failing to establish himself at the club, making just 17 appearances and notching five goals in all competition.

On Monday the former Express FC, Victors FC and Nairobi City Stars forward said, “I will now sit with my agent and decide on the best options available for my career development.”

Arch rivals AFC Leopards management made a spirited attempt to woo Sserunkuma to the Den to reunite him with the man who brought him to the KPL, Zradvko Logarusic.

Under Logarusic, Sserunkuma was declared the 2012 KPL Footballer of the Year in a campaign where Gor were beaten to the crown by a whisker by Tusker FC on the final day.
