The Argentine took centre stage with two sensational second-half goals as Barcelona won their Champions League first leg 3-0 against the Bundesliga champions at the Camp Nou.
Messi’s second was poetry in motion, his footwork leaving Boateng on his backside, before he coolly chipped the world’s best goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer.
Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp could only marvel at Messi’s talents, describing his move on Boateng as “almost illegal”.
“It was an honour and a privilege to see the little fellow tonight,” Redknapp said of the Barcelona No. 10 after the game.
“He is a genius. What he does with a football at times is beyond belief. What he did to Jerome Boateng for the second goal was almost illegal.
“He wanted to win that game and he has done it again.
Fellow Sky pundit Jamie Carragher added that Messi made Boateng look like “a baby in a playpen”.
Inevitably, social media blew up following Messi’s heroics.
