Sserunkuma is still our player Gor insist

GOR-KISUMUNAIROBI, December 10-Top scorer Dan Sserunkuma is still a league champions Gor Mahia player the club insists despite the Ugandan joining Tanzanian giants Simba SC in the close season.

The startling revelation was made by club first vice-chairman John Pesa on Tuesday when the cash strapped club entered into an agreement with Standard Media Group to raise funds through a mobile service number.

“The only player we have released is Geoffrey Kizito. Sserunkuma is still our player,” Pesa sensationally claimed in what could be yet another tussle between the club and the Ugandan Cranes international who has twice tried to force a move away from K’Ogalo, recently mid last season when he went to Europe for trials.

Fellow Uganda Cranes, Kizito was allowed to move on Monday after the club declined to demands of doubling his salary whilst Harambee Stars defender, David Owino, is reported to be set for trials at Simba with an aim of securing a permanent move from the two-time Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions.

The Standard deal comes a day after the club admitted it was struggling to maintain their top players ahead of a KPL hat-trick winning attempt and CAF Champions League campaign besides the KPL Top 8 and GOtv Shield cup ventures next season.

The Short Message Service (SMS) driven campaign between Gor and the group that runs the Standard and Nairobian newspaper titles as well as KTN television seeks to mobilise fans to raise funds for the team.

By sending an SMS to the number 22840 fans will subscribe to the service and with it make a donation to the club. This will complement the team’s efforts to raise money through their paybill number 350100 on the Safaricom mobile network.

Speaking during the function Standard Media Group Managing Editor Digital David Ohito said the partnership between the two entities will not only help Gor Mahia raise money, but would also help officials have a register of fans.

“It is our desire to develop young talent in the country and we hope that a time will come when the KPL will become a good employer,” he said.

He added:”We also want this partnership to provide the club with a sustainable revenue stream which will make them self-sustaining in the long run.”

Gor treasurer Ken Otieno admitted that the club is broke and needs help to be able to sign new blood and pay the current players.

“Our accounts are empty and have not paid our players their November salary. We are calling upon corporate sponsors to come on board and assist us,” he disclosed.

The Standard Group also donated Sh100,000 to Gor Mahia to kick start the campaign.
