Anxious Debuchy waits on surgery call

DEBUCHY-LEICESTERLONDON, England, Sept. 18-Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy will discover on Friday whether he requires surgery on the ankle ligament injury he suffered against Manchester City.

The France international had to leave the field on a stretcher after sustaining the injury towards the end of the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with City at the Emirates on Saturday.

Debuchy’s reaction when he was carried off suggested that the injury was serious, potentially a fracture, but the 29-year-old has allayed those fears, although he did reveal ligament damage, which could see him go under the knife.

The former Newcastle defender, who joined Arsene Wenger’s side ahead of the new season, wrote on Twitter: “No fracture but one broken ligament … I have to wait until Friday in order to know if I must have surgery.”

The injury to his compatriot has added to Wenger’s defensive woes, with Nacho Monreal also currently on the sidelines with a back injury, while teenager Hector Bellerin was drafted in at right-back in the 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 1 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday after Calum Chambers was laid low by tonsillitis.
