Zico eyes top eight finish

ZICO-SONYNAIROBI, Kenya, February 25- Sony Sugar coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, says he is looking forward for a successful season with a top-eight finish the minimal objective after leading his side to the top of Kenyan Premier League (KPL) last weekend.

Sony who beat debutants Top Fry All Stars 3-0 in their opener are currently perched at the top of the log alongside defending champions Gor Mahia on six points after humbling title chasing Sofapaka 1-0 at their new home ground, Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County on Sunday.

“I hope my players will maintain the same focus going forward, the job is far away to be completed since we have 28 matches to play.

“We have to continue with the sequence as a team and tackle each game at a time, but I’m positive we will not struggle like last season. We will get back to our position which is above top-eight,” Zico assured.

The former Harambee Stars tactician told Capital Sport he is not fazed by former Thika United custodian Lucas Indeche taking over from Wycliffe Kasaya, who ditched the club for GOtv winners AFC Leopards in goal.

“Indeche is a good keeper and I fail to understand why Thika terminated his contract since he helped them finish seventh. But when they dropped him, I was happy to bring him to my camp since I knew he will be the man to replace Kasaya,” he added.

Indeche who was outstanding during their match against Batoto Ba Mungu, was happy to be at the club and hoped to have a good outing under the guidance of former international Charles ‘Korea’ Omondi, who joined the Sugar Millers as goalkeeper trainer this season.

“I’m having a good training at Sony under the guidance of ‘Korea’ who gives me morale and pushes me to do more. I want to help Sony get back to their position because they don’t belong where they finished last year.

“I did not feel demoralized after Thika dropped me since it’s a journey of every player sometimes you are at the top and at other times your performance drops. I’m happy for the competition in my position, it makes me work extra hard in order to fight for the first choice keeper,” the shot-stopper who had a good stint at Thika for three seasons told.
