NAIROBI, Kenya, October 17 – Top 8 champions, Tusker FC will play against the new Kenyan Premier League (KPL) titleholders on December 14 to close the domestic season in yet another SuperSport/DStv Cup duel.
The one-off trophy has been contested as the official curtain raiser for the past two KPL campaigns between league and cup champions.
Tusker who won the Cup earlier this season by beating Gor Mahia are likely to face the same side who hold a commanding seven point lead at the summit with five games left.
Speaking to Capital Sport on Thursday, KPL CEO Jack Oguda said they reached the decision to promote the local game and reward excellence.
“This is a product of KPL and our sponsors requested us to have another contest at the end of the season.
“The season opener will pit KPL winners against GOtv Shield champions and the closing tie will see Top 8 holders battle it out with league champion,” Oguda explained.
K’Ogalo are also chasing the Shield, a competition Tusker were tossed out of, as they face Sony Sugar in this weekend’s quarterfinals.
In the event Gor complete the double, the losing finalist in the Shield will take to the field in the opening Super Cup.
The winner will walk away with USD 8,833.93 (Sh750, 000) while loser will pocket USD 5,889.19 (Sh500, 000).
