NAIROBI, Kenya, October 12 – Gor Mahia increased their chances for clinching two titles this season as they joined Sony Sugar on Saturday, to the semi finals of the GOtv Shield to be held on October 20.
Zedekiah Zico Otieno’s Sony Sugar was the first team to go through to the last four after edging out Mathare United 4-2 on post match penalties, following a 0-0 draw in regulation time.
Wycliffe Nyangech, Marwa Chamberi, Charles Odette and Ben Barasa converted their spot kicks for the Awendo based side while Daniel Mwaura and Kenneth Wendo missed theirs’ to send the slum boys home.
“As a coach I had confidence in my players, we were prepared for the penalties, and when I brought in Nyangechi it was a strategy because he is one of the best penalty takers in our side.
“I had no worries because I knew Mathare keeper could not save our spot kicks since he had not warmed up,” said Zico after wining their match.
In the second match of the day at Nyayo National stadium, defending champions Gor Mahia continued their good form, knocking out Western Stima 2-0 courtesy of a Dan Sserunkuma double.
The Ugandan striker bagged a brace in the 38th and 45th minute to dim the Kakamega based side hopes of clinching the title for the first time.
“I am very pleased with the boys because they stuck to the game plan, my focus is on our next game which is Thika United in the KPL, then think about the Shield Semis,” K’Ogalo coach Bob Williamson stated.
The shield quarters continues on Sunday with former Champions Sofapaka taking on Division one side Finlays Horticulture as AFC Leopards entertains Karuturi Sports at Nyayo National Stadium.
The winner will represent Kenya in the CAF Confederations Cup next year unless Gor clinch the league leaving the slot open for the losing finalist.
