Chemos eyes marathon switch after Rio 2016

CHEMOS-STEEPLENAIROBI, KENYA, September 19 – World women’s 3000m steeplechase titleholder, Milcah Chemos is eyeing to shift distances to the marathon after the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Chemos fresh from clinching her fourth straight IAAF Diamond League title to add on to the world crown she motored to in Moscow, is now focusing on defending her Commonwealth title Glasgow, Scotland next year.

“In Moscow, I wanted to win it really bad having tried for so long. God willing after the 2016 Olympics, I will join the marathon, but I have to prepare for that since marathon running is not easy, you have to train a lot,” the athlete who added the top medal to the two bronze she bagged at the Berlin 2009 and Daegu 2011 editions told reporters Thursday.

The African record holder stopped the timer at 9:11.65 in Russia is also targeting back to back triumphs at the next edition of the event in London before quitting the track for the roads.

Chemos became the first Kenyan female athlete to win the gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Worlds, an event dominated by their male counterparts where Ezekiel Kemboi held on to his crown.

She led compatriot Lydia Chepkurui for the 1-2 before applying the icing on the cake by clinching her fourth straight elite circuit title when she forced the latter to once again play bridesmaid at the Diamond League final in Brussels on September 6.

The Kenya Police training instructor will be among the marquee attractions at this year’s Baringo Half Marathon.
