Friday in Port Elizabeth selection headache

NAIROBI, Kenya, December 4- Head coach Mike Friday has a selection headache ahead of the third leg of the IRB World Sevens Series this weekend in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Collins Injera, Biko Adema and forward Oscar Ouma are returning home after helping the side sparkle at the Dubai Sevens last weekend.

Billy Odhiambo, Oscar Ayondi and Fabian Olando have been drafted in to replace the trio but in doing so, the former England coach who has brought back the groove to the side is keen to sustain the momentum.

Former captain Sydney Ashioya has been ruled out with hamstring injury with the coach yet to line-up a replacement.

No one would begrudge Friday should Port Elizabeth prove to be the burst of the Kenyan bubble since the team was only capable of finishing 12th last season.

Kenya are now joint second in the IRB HSBC Sevens World Series log after claiming third place finish at the Dubai 7s over the weekend and are drawn against Argentina, Wales and Spain.

The side registered a 15-12 play-off victory over France that bagged them 17 points, taking their tally to 32, same as titans Fiji and Samoa.

Kenya fell to a 7-27 loss to New Zealand in the Main Cup semi final after stopping Canada 19-7 in the quarters in the second leg of the series.

They had ended day one second in Pool A after beating Scotland 12-5, following this up with a 10-7 result over Spain before narrowly losing 10-14 to pool winners Fiji.

This was Kenya’s second successive semi final appearance, having also reached the same stage at the season opening Gold Coast 7s in Australia in October, finishing fourth overall and bagging 15 points.

They will definitely look to better that performance when the third leg takes place in Port Elizabeth, South Africa this weekend.
