Wanyama nominated for CAF Award

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 28- Celtic and Harambee Stars star, Victor Wanyama, is among the nominees for the GLO-CAF Awards scheduled for December 20 in Accra, Ghana.

The midfielder who is attracting a lot of interest in English Premier League clubs including leaders Manchester United will battle it out with Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Senegalese young striker, Pape Moussa Konate in the Most Promising Talent categories.

Wanyama, whose Scottish League Champions Celtic are in action on Wednesday night with a visit to Hearts, is also on the shortlist for Sports Personality of the Year at the Annual Soya Awards set for December 8 in Nairobi.

The defensive midfielder has played an influential role at Celtic weighed in with vital goals for his club and has scored six in the current season.

The pick of these goals being the opening header in Celtic’s historic 2-1 win over Spanish giants Barcelona in UEFA Champions League besides being part of the Harambee Stars where he has featured since he was 15.

Salah, 20, was part of the Egyptian U-23 team that played at London 2012 Olympic football tournament where he scored in three of their four matches with Swiss club FC Basel signing him up in June 2012.

He also played for Egypt senior team and scored in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Guinea and in 2013 AFCON qualifier against Central African Republic.

Konate, 19, scored in each of the four games Senegal played at London 2012
Olympic football finals including a brace in a 2-0 win over Uruguay and by the time
Senegal bowed out in the quarter finals he had scored five of their total of six goals in the competition.

He had an impressive season with Maccabi Tel Aviv scoring eight times in 42 appearances before he was snatched up for 2012-2013 season by Russian club FC Krasnodar. He has also played and scored for the Lions of Teranga senior team in 2012.

In the National Team of the Year category, reigning African champions Zambia have been nominated along with the team Chipolopolo beat in 2012 AFCON final, Ivory Coast alongside Cape Verde and Central African Republic.

Recently crowned African Women’s Champions, Equatorial Guinea will fight it out with Ghana’s U-17 side that finished third in this year’s FIFA World Cup and Nigeria’s Super Falcons for the honours in the Women’s Team of the Year.
