Otuoma trashes Nock’s London 2012 report

NAIROBI, Kenya, September 10- Sports Minister, Dr. Paul Otuoma has trashed the London 2012 report prepared by the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (Nock) claiming it did not shed the real reasons behind the country’s disappointing performance at the quadrennial Games.

On Monday, Otuoma said the document presented to him by Nock last week “brushed over the real issues” as he hinted the Olympics body had moved to absolve themselves from blame by laying responsibility at the doorstep of the athletes the over the much criticised performance.

“It must be very clear that this is what happened and these are some of the recommendations on what needs to happen in the future.

“That will be a far much more enriching a report to the republic rather than stating that so and so fell sick, so and so woke up on the wrong side of the bed or so and so din’t look at so and so properly. That is not what we are looking forward to,” the minister who was in London for the duration of the Games stated.

When contacted for comment, Nock CEO Stephen Arap Soi however, claimed they had not received any official communication from the ministry since they handed it in.

“We have not heard about these issues that are pending or haven’t been clarified.

“I think the Ministry is best placed to outline what exactly they didn’t find the man who was at the centre of the London 2012 brouhaha alleged.

According to the minister, the report that will form the nucleus of the probe to London 2012 ordered by President Mwai Kibaki will only be made public when it has “satisfied that it has captured all the issues raised.”

“Just releasing a report because people are reporting is not an issue and we will release it when we are ready. We must draw a line between competitiveness and development of sport and have a strategic re-orientation on how we prepare for these Games,” Otuoma charged in another implicit pointer Nock have all to do to clear themselves from the outcry over the performance where Kenya won 2 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze.

Otuoma did not give a time frame on when the eagerly awaited report would be released as he called for early preparations for the 2016 Games in Rio.

The country’s Olympics body was accused of alienating the athletes, high handedness before and during the Games as well as pressuring the competitors to honour a pre-Olympics camp in the UK city of Bristol that led to a revolt among distance runners.

Clamour to get to the bottom of the London fiasco and heads to roll at the Olympics body has gathered momentum since the same athletes have gone on to star in the Samsung Diamond League and IAAF World Challenge meetings barely a month after flopping for their nation.

Nock on the other hand pointed fingers at the athletes and their federation, Athletics Kenya (AK) over the disharmony in the Kenyan ranks.

AK boss, Isaiah Kiplagat and his Nock counterpart, Dr Kipchoge Keino, were engaged in a supremacy battle ahead of the Games with each taking a hard line stance over the Bristol camp that was ultimately boycotted by the distance runners save for Olympics steeplechase champion, Ezekiel Kemboi, who nonetheless returned home after a few days.

Kenya was looking to surpass their best Olympics performance of 6 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze posted in Beijing 2008 before it all unravelled in London.
