Tusker in barren stalemate against APR

NAIROBI, Kenya, February 18- The Kenyan CAF Champions League duck continued on Saturday when the visiting Rwandese military side APR forced hosts Tusker FC to a barren draw at Nyayo National Stadium.
The match played in an almost empty stadium saw the Brewer’s striker, Paul Were rattle the net in the 14th minute but his finish was chalked off for offside.
Fellow forward Dennis Mukaisi came ever so close when his goal bound effort after the half hour mark was cleared off the line in unorthodox fashion after rounding off keeper Jean Claude Ndoli.
In an open first half where the home side pressed, APR almost grabbed a crucial away goal on two occasions, first through Jean Mugiraneza thumping header in the 20th that flew just wide 20th minute before Diego Oliviera broke through on the left and his angled shot missed the inside of the far post three minutes later.
Chances were traded after the breather but none could break the deadlock as APR returned to Kigali with the slight home advantage.
Tusker FC coach, Sammy Omolo rued his team’s wasted opportunities of establishing a first leg lead.
“We could have got at least two goals and we were not good on our set pieces but we have a good away record to count on in the second leg,” he said.
Opposite number, Ernie Brandt lauded the Brewers and praised his side for their solid away display.
“This is not over. Tusker are a good team and we are happy to leave here with the draw since it was not easy,” the Dutchman added.
