NAIROBI, Kenya, February 8 – Veteran rally driver Azar Anwar is confident of banishing the memories of last season by producing a stellar KCB National Rally Championship campaign.
Azar told Capital sport on Tuesday that he intends to build on the 2010 season ending Guru Nanak Rally in which he finished second.
“Last year was very difficult. We had a lot of trouble but we managed to sort it out in the last rally and we managed a second place finish,” said Azar.
The former national champion who finished seventh in the championship last season is pegging all his hopes in his rebuilt Mitsubishi Evo 8.
We have done a full rebuild of the car and we are quite ready for Voi this weekend,” added Azar.
The challenges the upcoming season poses are not lost on Azar who expects another scrap for rally supremacy.
“The championship has become very serious. At the top level there are at least 10 drivers capable of winning. Depending on how the luck goes for each of them and how reliably they run, that will shape the championship. Its going to be very fast and very competitive,” said Azar.
Fifty three drivers will get the season off and running in Voi on Saturday. Exciting new stages around Shelembwa-Ikanga, Ndii-Irima and Sagala.
Defending champion Alistair Cavenagh will be first off the ramp when the event gets flagged off outside the KCB Voi Branch at 8.30 am.
