Arenas shines as Magic beat Spurs

ORLANDO, December 24 – Recent arrival Gilbert Arenas scored 14 points and handed out nine assists Thursday to help new-look Orlando beat San Antonio 123-101 and halt the Spurs' 10-game NBA winning streak.Arenas came off the bench and added six rebounds as he backed up an ailing Jameer Nelson. Jason Richardson, another newcomer to the retooled Magic, had 15 points as Orlando won for the first time since they put together two blockbuster trades at the weekend.

Magic mainstay Dwight Howard scored 29 points and hauled in 14 rebounds.

Tony Parker scored 16 points and Tim Duncan scored 12 for the NBA-leading Spurs, who lost for the first time since December 1.

The Spurs looked flat a day after a victory over Denver, but a weary Spurs team was perhaps just what the Magic needed after losing eight of their last nine games.

Orlando were struggling when they engineered two trades on Saturday, bringing Arenas from Washington and Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu and Earl Clark from Phoenix.

They gave up Rashard Lewis, Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat along with a 2011 first-round draft selection and cash in the moves.

Orlando promptly lost at Atlanta, then fell to Dallas at home.

Arenas came off the bench and played 28 minutes. The Spurs led by six when he entered the game in the first quarter and he played the rest of the half as Orlando seized a 62-53 lead.

Nelson, battling a stomach ailment, received intravenous fluids at halftime, a Magic spokesman said. He started the second half but was replaced by Arenas early in the third quarter.

Orlando built a 97-67 lead going into the final period en route to an encouraging win that saw four other Magic players – Brandon Bass, Turkoglu, Ryan Anderson and J.J. Redick – score in double figures.
