Fifa names body to organise polls

NAIROBI, December 23 – FIFA on Thursday named a eight-member independent board to organise the national elections for Kenyan football set for early next year, officials said.

The world football federation also appointed Leodegar Tenga, a member of its Associations Committee, who is also the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) president, to monitor and ensure the election process is done in a fully transparent manner.

Kenyan football has been wracked by a long-standing dispute between two national associations, Football Kenya Limited (FKL) and the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) which have been fighting for control of the sport.

In April, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) ruled that the FKL was rightfully in charge of running football in the country, in a case which had been filed by the KFF.

But Tenga, who has been heading a FIFA fact-finding mission to meet Kenyan football stakeholders ahead of the elections, said the FKL would have to transform itself back to an association once the process is over in April 2011.

"This should be the first major assignment of the newly-elected Executive Committee, and upon completion of that assignment, all other associations should be deregistered, leaving Kenya with only one recognised football association," said Tenga.

"The decision is aimed at helping Kenya to do away with having more than one football association which makes it a case of suspension in accordance with FIFA Statutes," he added.

The independent board, led by a retired High Court judge, Justice Joseph Kwach is expected to deliver transparent, all-inclusive, and free and fair elections.
