NAIROBI, Kenya, December 6- Sixteen million shillings was raised in this year’s Standard Chartered Marathon up from Sh14 million in 2010. National Steering Committee chairman Geoffrey Githinji who released the figures on Monday said that the funds will go towards sponsoring sight restoring surgeries in five hospitals at the Coast, Western, Rift Valley and Central Provinces.

“We have had a very successful year in all our ‘Seeing is Believing’ initiatives. In 2010 we have funded five hospitals and we are glad to announce that we will continue funding all five projects in 2011,” said Githinji.

Stanchart will once again work with the Christian Blind Mission (CBM) who are the bank’s technical partners in implementing all ‘Seeing is Believing’ initiatives in the country.

“We will continue our partnership with CBM to continue funding projects at PCEA Kikuyu Eye Hospital, Sabatia Eye Hospital in Western Province, Tenwek Hospital Eye Unit in Rift Valley, Kwale District Eye Centre and Lighthouse Eye Centre at the Coast,” added Githinji.

David Barmasai and Hellena Kirop were crowned winners of this year’s event in the men’s and women’s race respectively.
