Victims of Nyayo tragedy to be remembered

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 2 – A memorial service for the victims of the Nyayo National Stadium stampede will take place on Wednesday.
Eight fans lost their lives and 11 others were injured at the start of the clash between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia a fortnight ago.

Winifred Karimi Kinyua, one of the victims of the tragedy was laid to rest in Meru last Friday.

David Oundo Ochieng’, Victor Juma Okoth Otieno,  Stephen Ochieng’ Onyango and Franklin Onimu Kiribwa are to buried this weekend.

The service will be held at the handball gymnasium at 2 pm.

The inter-denominational service will bring together families and relatives of those who died or were injured during the tragedy.

The committees from both Gor and AFC are collaborating with the Kenya Premier League towards the assistance of the bereaved families

The KPL clubs, officials, coaches, players, referees and soccer fans will attend to condole with the bereaved.

There will also be representatives of the Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB), Football Kenya Limited (FKL) and the Government.

Public contribution towards those involved in the tragedy can be made to ‘Gor/AFC October 23rd Victims Solidarity Fund’ now open at the Kenya Commercial Bank, Sarit Centre Branch, Account No.1122502176.

Contributions can be sent through KCB branches countrywide.
