NAIROBI, Kenya, October 13 – National women’s volleyball coach David Lungaho is targeting at least a second round spot in the upcoming FIVB Women’s Volleyball Championships in Japan. Kenya has been grouped in Pool B alongside 2006 finalists Brazil, Italy, Netherlands, Puerto Rico and the Czech Republic.
“Our intention first of all is to advance to the second round which means we have to win at least two matches,” Lungaho told Capital Sport on Wednesday.
“We know we are in the toughest pool but it doesn’t mean that we are not going to perform well. We’re hoping to beat at least two teams and our targets are Puerto Rico and the Czech Republic,” added the veteran coach.
Lungaho is confident that he’s experienced squad which is captained by Brackcides Agalla will hold their own especially against the top tier nations.
“Brazil and Italy are formidable sides. We have a coach from Japan who is helping us and he is already back in his country to prepare for our arrival. I also believe that the experience we’ve gotten from the last championship will also be beneficial,” he added.
Lungaho spoke after the team received the national flag from Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Wednesday.
“Sports help to integrate different cultures and promote ethnic unity in our country. I wish you all the best in your endeavours as you go and compete in Japan,” said Mr. Odinga.
