NAIROBI, Kenya,September 16- The third edition of the Laikipia Games takes place on Saturday at the Laikipia Nature Conservancy with increased numbers of the surrounding community expected to participate.
Games organizer Martin Keino told Capital Sport that they have broadened the scope of events as a means to tap talent from different disciplines.
“We’ve got the different traditional games by the communities which they played back in the day, so it’s a very exciting day for sports,” said Keino.
The event which is being held for the third time is being used as a vehicle to foster coexistence amongst the different communities by offering their respective youth an opportunity to interact.
Last year, the games’, which is the brainchild of conservationist Kuki Gallman, was recognized by the Peace and Sport Forum by honouring it with the ‘Sports Event of the Year’ award.
“The award has really excited people here and put us on the map which means there is a lot more excitement regarding this unique event,” said Keino.
Keino highlighted the role played by the games by creating peace amongst the local pastoralist communities in the region.
“The communities here know that sports has really brought them together and eased the tensions in this region. The communities are interacting a lot more,” said Keino.
Some of the sports that will feature are athletics, cricket, football and volleyball.
