MADRID, June 7 – Real Madrid's Argentinian international striker Gonzalo Higuain, the club's top scorer last season, has extended his contract with the Spanish giants until June 2016, the club said on Monday.The 22-year-old joined Real in January 2007 from Argentine side River Plate and was under contract with the club until June 2013.
He scored 27 league goals for Real last season, making him La Liga’s second-most prolific scorer behind fellow Argentine Lionel Messi of Barcelona.
Higuain’s father Jorge played professional football in France for Brest where Gonzalo was born in 1987. He was 10 months old when he moved to Argentina with his family and lived there until his move to Real Madrid.
He has scored twice in five appearances for Argentina since making his debut last October and is part of Diego Maradona’s squad for the World Cup which gets underway in South Africa on Friday.
