NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 2 – United States Ambassador Michael Ranneberger has confirmed that Attorney General Amos Wako is the Kenyan government official handed a travel ban by Washington a week ago.
In his twitter page, the ambassador confirmed weekend media reports that Mr Wako was the latest official prohibited from setting foot on US soil for allegedly hindering reforms in Kenya.
His twitter posting says: "Still wondering which senior Kenyan official has been banned from the U.S. for obstructing reforms? The answer is…," he said referring to a Saturday newspaper headline that said “It is Wako”
United States Assistant Secretary of State in charge of African Affairs Johnnie Carson who announced the travel ban during a visit to Kenya last week declined to name the official only saying a letter would be sent to the banned individual. Since the announcement, speculation has been rife in local and international media over who the individual might be, with most fingers pointing at the country’s serving Chief Government Legal Advisor after Mr Carson said the person “had been in the government for two decades.”
Mr Wako has been the country’s chief legal counsel since 1991 and has survived two regimes including the NARC administration when most senior officials were sent packing.
Besides the latest ban, Mr Carson said Washington was considering similar action against three more prominent Kenyans, but again he declined to name the officials.
Mr Carson’s announcement stoked a diplomatic storm between the two countries with Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula “vowing to retaliate.”
President Barrack Obama’s administration has been persistent on reforms in Kenya and has kept consistent pressure on the coalition government. In September, Washington threatened to cut links with 15 government officials including Cabinet Ministers, MPs and Permanent Secretaries in Nairobi for allegedly being a stumbling block to the country’s reform agenda.
To further push for the implementation of Agenda Four of the mediation talks, Mr Ranneberger said that his government would scrutinise proposals for Kenya in international financial institutions including the IMF and World Bank.

| Ladies and gentlemen,
I know there is nothing rational about the court of public opinion but you miss the point. Kenyans are a funny lot.
They want to eat their cake and have it. Banning of these people and their families can help coupled with ICC.
Ati leaving them to their devices is an option is beyond me. The ruling class is untouchable in Kenya. Once the message sinks in that your can not steal in kenya and hide the loot in america or europe then these guys will sober up.
Most of you dont know how crucial europe is to looters and government functionaries.Do you guys think the billions stolen in fake contracts every year is in Kenya? that money is negotiated and stashed in offshore accounts in Europe.
Do you think there are many options/ sahe havens for looters if you take Australia, Europe and America out of the equation? No.They can only be left with Middle east and China as options. And they are attractive. Wako goes to Europe at least twice a month. Why? your guess is as good as mine.
While tunajikaanga na mafuta yetu by voting these stinking leeches after every 5 years, these friendly countries can only do what they can.
I will be so happy if somebody told these people that is "you screw the local universities, your family will suffer" they should not screw our system through looting and bad policies then send their kids at our expense to mzungu countries.

| For as long as it's not a fellow Kenyan hacking a fellow Kenyan, then I believe it's worth it. Wako has immense powers to prevent anarchy in this country in many ways....but he let "burn" in 2007/08,he is an impediment to reforms always protecting the government of the day and personalities only for his selfish ambitions of protecting his much revered job.Ask him why he dropped the murder case of Kenya Electrical Trade Allied Workers Union (KETAWU)Deputy General Secretary Francis Makoko Okisai in 1993 with Pius Joseph Masika who run for parliament in the just ended general election in Gumo's tuff West lands Constituency. The two principals its time to act....get us another AG. |

| These travel bans are not solution for Kenyan. If really USA wants to help Kenyans they should have pressed for the current govt to be dissolved so as to elect one single leader we are able to question if things go wrong.Hii nusu nusu mkate is not helping us. |

| what is so important by being denied entry to USA?Many prominent kenyans have been denied visa to USA, and still life continues Dont we have
many expatriates who plan to retire in kenya?
Obama is shooting himself on the foot by treating kenyans this way.Yes, to let the cat out of the bag, Kenya will step back on the war against terrorism.Haven't Kenya suffered because of the Americans before, yet our big brother does not realize that? It is in kenya they bring pirates from Somalia for a court process. If Americans continue this way, should kenya continue to cooperate?Anyway China is at hand.Kenya dont need usa to survive |

| That is a good place to start the travel bans. The article on Daily Nation over the weekend seemed to somehow suggest that Wako has done a great job.I didnt believe that for a minute, he has been the greatest impediment to justice in kenya by protecting all his corrupt cronies.Time to retire sir and hopefully serve some time at kamiti. |

| US should seek to empower the common Kenyan rather than imposing travel ban on the "haves". They shall continue to have as long as the regular Kenyan remains powerless. Fund economic activities at the local level. |

| The other 3 officials should also face the ban with urgency and the list should be expanded to include the two principals and their spouse |
