LONDON, Mar 13 - A Kenyan care home assistant who led a life of luxury by allegedly helping her husband launder the profits of a Sh700 million mortgage fraud is facing a long jail term in Britain.

Ruth Wambui Mungai-Azeez, 26, denied the charges when she appeared before the Southwark Crown Court in Central London.

She was charged with acquisition, use of criminal proceeds and with assisting another person to retain the benefit of crime.

Mrs Azeez is said to have lived in a six-bedroom house with 12 plasma televisions and drove a Bentley and Land Rover.

She took holidays in Dubai and the south of France, kept Sh220 million in her bank accounts and blew huge sums at expensive bars and restaurants. But her life was funded by crime, Southwark crown court heard.

Her Nigerian husband Victor Ayinde-Azeez is alleged to have led a mortgage fraud gang which plundered nearly Sh700 million from high street banks in six weeks.

He 'bought' 22 houses around the South-East and, with his accomplices, applied for mortgages from high street lenders.

When Mrs Azeez was arrested, she was about to leave the country after her husband texted her a warning that the police were on their way. He is believed to be abroad.

The Kenyan national was told by Judge Martin Beddoe: "It seems to me that I'm going to have to pass on you a significant sentence, without credit for a guilty plea."

She was denied bail and remanded at a North London women prison waiting sentencing later this month.

We must breath a sigh of relief that in fact, our Kenyan lady was captured alive. Usually any involvement with these Nigerian street business cartels ends in murder. Nigerians' notoriety in fraudulent deals world-wide is no longer news to even an 87 yr old native of the West.

I don't see anything wrong with Kenyan women interracting with other nationals. The problems they now face are simply out of greed for money. But as long the law catches up with them or on the wrong side of events, let them enjoy themselves whether bad or good. Kenyan women simply need prayers to change their attitude and know exactly who they are dating.

If women didnt exist all the money in the world would have meaning. It is money or marriage? May be both...

A good friend of mine once said.If Kenyan women want to marry Nigerians let them do what they want! There are some good ones and some bad ones!If she ends up in trouble that is her life .She can expect no sympathy from us.If it turns out well more happiness for her! Arunga,Wambui,Akinyi dont deserve our sympathy. They made a choice and it simply had consequences. If wambui marries a Kenyan gangster the same applies! Let our women marry who they want .Maisha ni yao.

There is nothing like them doing a background check. Wambui here obviously knew what her husband was upto.

I have no issues with whom our kenyan ladies interact, mingle, date or marry with but before we drawn into relationship and eventual walking down the isle let them take time to understand who you are dealing with, intentions, background and lifestyle. Lets not be driven by materials and size of their pocket. A filial advice

@Moffat. There is nothing like Kenyan girls. Our girls are free to get married/hooked to whoever they want. When our men marry UK,US con-women, do we call them names? Lets stop this nonsense and appreciate that Kenya is part of the global village. Xenophobia has no place in the 21st C.
