LONDON, Nov 25 - Climate talks in Copenhagen next month "can and must be a turning point" in efforts to combat global warming, UN chief Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday, urging a global push to make them a success.
In a video address to a climate change and health conference in London, Ban said the UN summit would bring together governments from around the world to "forge a response to one of the most fundamental challenges of our time".
"Copenhagen can and must be a turning point in the world's efforts to reduce emissions and protect people and the planet," the UN secretary general said.
"We need an agreement in Copenhagen that charts a path to a healthier, cleaner, more prosperous future for all."
Ban said climate change "could pose one of this century's greatest risks to public health", saying rising temperatures meant more mosquitoes which could increase the spread of malaria, and changing weather would hit water supplies.
"The message is clear. Climate change is about our health and the health of our planet. We are all in this together," he said.
"I call on every citizen and every government to make Copenhagen a success. I urge everyone to add his or her voice to the calls being heard around the world calling for climate action and for a safer, healthier future for us all."
The UN conference in Copenhagen takes place on December 7-18, with US President Barack Obama among those who are due to attend. |

| REFLECTIONS ON GLOBAL WARMING.
But to stop pollution, and if nothing is done soon, it will be too late to take action to slow global warming, because it will reach such a degree warming will no longer see the point of return and this will only happen in the coming decades. It is said that in this century the Earth's global temperature will increase from 1 to 6 degrees, you might not think anything at first glance. But rising by degrees bring drastic consequences. When the soil reaches the 3rd degree of increase is no longer being able to do anything, because the warming is going to get out of hand and caused the disappearance of the Amazon because of massive fires that will be impossible to stop, that's very serious because automatically cause the temperature rises by 1 or 2 degrees. Well the 4th grade, sea level rise because of melting icecaps of Antarctica, disappearing all coastal countries, meaning that the South American coasts 1eras be seriously affected. Beyond the melting in Antarctica is already a reality today. This happening in a more rapid than predicted. The volume containing all existing ice masses on the planet, could cause sea level rise of 60 to 70 m! You will see never before seen superstorms, enormous suffering and this will happen much sooner than we think, maybe even as living for ourselves, but so are our children. These are some of the innumerable consequences that climate change will bring and perhaps there are actually many other things that we do not know, and neither imagined that could happen. Climate change and we are living. Major natural disasters before they happened every few decades, now increasingly occurs more often. These phenomena occur with increasing frequency and more intensity. The detachment of large blocks of ice is happening in the poles, giant ice masses of hundreds of km. squares. While the release of such blocks that collapse will have no effect on sea level rise, means a warning that something is wrong because these outbursts of this nature are unusual, it is because of global warming as the scientists . And that is the area most affected by warming, and Antarctica is the area that suffered most at the temperature rise. Obviously, the planet is telling us that this reaching its limit, and is warning us. This is the age in which we must take proper account of the environment and learn to survive what we are going to face, it will be a very tough battle for survival, because let's be honest, little is going to do for this, or when you really look for a solution and will be too late. And developing countries will suffer the greatest impact. This global crisis provoked by the enormous economic and human losses. Wars over scarce natural resources and one of the main reasons is the scarcity of water. It is very difficult, because we must change the mentality of people, change our ways of living, and that's not an overnight. And there are other interests that play through the profit and expansion of the 1st world countries and the developing of which detract from more even look for new alternatives for development that are ecological, such an alternative is solar and wind but there are other possibilities. So it is very difficult to change an already dominant globally that governs our society. Otherwise we can perhaps say that the big culprit is the capitalist system, but speaking from the stage of industrial development. The industries are deriving the large percentage of greenhouse gases that harm the environment. But we think that is going to do much more for this cause and that the man is convinced that no other if we want our protection. Man is a creature of habit might arise on that side some hope, but do not have much time. We must find solutions to prevent such predictions of climate catastrophes do not occur and no solutions to address them in tomorrow. Prevention is better than cure fits nicely into this theme. And I think one thing is certain the economic cost would be enormously greater if we continue in the same rein, which means rebuilding cities devastated by natural disasters that actually happens but will become more common and more destructive power, potential new diseases that can occur and the scarcity of certain resources would make these costs were very high achievement, and this is very clear, not everyone can access them, will be very few, there will be wars over them, and good because of the increased level sea, countries with fewer resources can not be saved. And the richest countries to seek solutions to build, species barriers block walls to avoid leaving giant underwater. What is an injustice because perhaps a few can be saved, those with more resources and are more powerful, which in turn are the worst polluters. Can you imagine what could become the economic cost? would be astronomical, but more importantly
is undoubtedly the human cost that this would cause. No doubt that this education will be critical, since institutions and households. It's time to really know and act. You can no longer continue to ignore, details more details unless climate change is a reality and is due in large part to the action of man, that I have no doubt. I think the climate undergoes natural changes but I think the man has accelerated this process. But think beyond that, what is it that we let those who come to future generations and other living things? Some people think that maybe this can happen, but downplay it because they think they are not going to play in their lives or might happen next in a long time, but as I said before, those who come to? Suffer the consequences of what their ancestors did.
Then I will say more in detail what can cause increased by degrees according to Mark Lynas in a book he wrote called "Six Degrees" (six degrees).
A degree more: it would end the Arctic ice.
Lynas raises the disappearance of Arctic sea ice for six months if the temperature rises one degree centigrade over. In addition, the tides could submerge all homes on the coast of the Bay of Bengal, between Burma and India, home to over one million people. Should South Atlantic hurricane, severe droughts in the western United States where they are located cities like San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles and would be unexpected changes in farming in England, where more than 400 vineyards.
More than 2 degrees: it would end the coral reefs.
It would accelerate the melting of Greenland's glaciers. Jakobshavn glacier would follow that if lots of melted ice would be enough to supply drinking water to all residents of New York for a year. The extinction of polar bears would not turn back and insects may start to migrate to many regions have become more temperate, a fact which is already evident in parts of Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia. The island nation of Tuvalu in the South Pacific, could be submerged by the tides and coral reefs disappear, because they resist the increase in water temperature.
More than 3 degrees: the threat would be on the Amazon
The snow in the Alps would end and heat waves would be normal in the Mediterranean and in the middle of central Europe. Category 6 hurricane worse than Katrina, would be more frequent and the Amazon rainforest could disappear by the spread of fires.
More than 4 degrees: disappear Venice and part of Egypt. The melting of Himalayan glaciers that feed the Ganges River, would occur before 2035. The flooding would be frequent. Furthermore, without snow to produce water, would famine. Northern Canada would become the most prolific agricultural area of the planet and ice of western Antarctica could collapse by raising the sea level to the destruction of coastal areas of Latin America. Also completely flood Venice (Italy) and parts of Egypt and Bangladesh.
More than 5 degrees: there would be no water for Los Angeles, Cairo, Lima or Bombay.
In a situation like this, the war for the liquid would be imminent, a situation that many of the world's experts have announced.
More than 6 degrees: we would return to the Cretaceous period.
For lack of nutrients, and to the extinction of more than 70 percent of the species, the ocean would be bright blue. Deserts advance on the continents. The disaster would be a matter of every day and many major world cities like New York would be underwater. The world could resemble the Cretaceous Period 144 million years ago, in which only 18 percent of the Earth's surface were above water, a figure that today is approaching 30 percent.
I am convinced and strongly believe in this. I also believe that this century will be key because it will set the course of humanity. I think we're at the right time to change or condemn us to extinction.
I clarify that I accept and respect those who disagree, just express my thoughts.
This simply is intended to inform and raise awareness.
I know this not long ago, that really changes is what provoked the action, but information is also very important, awareness is the 1st step.
Of course I want to contribute with something more but so far as not. |
