NAIROBI, Kenya Sep 17 – Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta asserted his political supremacy when his TNA party captured the Kajiado North and Kangema parliamentary seats in by-elections held on Monday.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ODM easily nailed it in Ndhiwa where Aghostinho Neto garnered 21,565 votes with KANU’s Tom Otieno coming a distant second with 2,290 votes.

Rosemary Atieno of TNA bagged 216 votes from 140 polling centres in Ndhiwa.

In Kangema, TNA’s Tiras Ngahu was announced winner with 13,752 votes with Simon Mwangi of UDF coming a remote second with 2,958 votes.

Moses ole Sakuda of TNA won in Kajiado North followed by ODM’s Peter ole Mositet, with PNU’s Antony Keen finishing third.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Isaack Hassan decried voter apathy in Kajiado North.

“It is unfortunate that we had a low voter turnout in Kajiado North,” Hassan said.

He however congratulated voters in Kangema and Ndhiwa which recorded impressive turnouts.

Hassan said Monday’s by-elections were testimony that the commission will be efficient in conducting a free and fair general election scheduled for March 4, 2013.

“Kenyans should now know that the commission has begun a journey of conducting a free and fair election in 2013,” he said. “We shall keep the faith and finish the race.”

He assured Kenyans that the commission will improve various systems from Monday’s by-elections experiences.

“Kenyans should now know that the commission has begun a journey of conducting a free and fair election in 2013. We shall keep the faith and finish the race” – Hassan.

“We have learnt a lot, and since we are going to have six races in the general election, we will have to improve our systems for the better,” he said.

And to those still doubting the commission’s preparedness to hold a general election next year, Hassan said: “They should know that we are ready.”

“That date which has been set for March 4 will not change. Kenyans are going to vote on that day and the commission is well prepared and whoever has a doubt should know that he/she is wrong,” he said.

He has urged Parliament to expedite proceedings on the Elections Regulations Bill which is still pending in the House.

“Once they pass it, it will become law. Those are some of the things that are pending and we are asking Parliament to expedite them,” he said.

Kenya is gearing up for a general election which is scheduled to be held in March 2013.

It is congratulations to Voters for their worthy conduct and the IEBC for their professionalism. I would however urge the the government to to declare even by-election days public holidays to boost voter turn out to avoid a repeat of what we had at Kajiado North; results which are determined by only 30% of the voting population which of course may be unrepresentative.

Well done TNA! All we are waiting for is Angela Ambitho of Infotrak and Ceaser Handa of Strategic Research to release…(cook) new polls and tell us that by ODM retaining the safe seat of Ndhiwa, Raila’s popularity has sky-rocketed to over 50% and he will win first round. I guarantee we will have a poll out by end of next week aimed at manipulating and brainwashing the electorate.

You simply dont stamp your authority by winning in the village. Unless of course you are being crowned a tribal chief! Kenyans should go for the best not mere purposeless tribal numbers. The country has been held back by tribalism for far too long. We are being misdirected by people whose motives and even leadership have remained wanting. Tribalism should NEVER EVER be used as yardstick for better leadership. Guys who are coming up with this story of two horse race are desperate in one way or another. Kenyans should wake up to see the mischief in all this!
