NAIROBI, Kenya, May 24 – Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital has officially been handed over to the Kenyan Government by Chinese contractors.
Speaking after the handover ceremony, Kenyatta University Hospital Board Chairperson Olive Mugenda said the facility which is expected to be in operation from August this year will provide quality health services to all Kenyans.
“I want to emphasise what our CS for health said that it will be a referral hospital and also a specialised hospital. We will be able to deal with all kind of diseases on referral basis and help Kenyans who may be suffering from different those diseases. The impact of the hospital will be great as you all know health care is one of the President Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda and we are definitely playing that role very well,” Mugenda said.
She further stated that the board is open to partnerships not only from China but also from other world class facilities.
She further stated that the board will start a recruitment process in June.
On his part, the main hospital contractor from China William Zhong said he was delighted to finally hand over a full-fledged hospital adding that the Chinese Government will continue to support Kenya in achieving its developmental agenda in all sectors.
“We have been keen and looking forward to hand over this project to the Kenyan Government and the client who is Kenyatta University. Today is a very good day and I am so happy. It has been a long journey over seven years but finally we are here. This hospital will help Kenyans in receiving good health services. Our Chinese Government representative is also happy, and we promise to continue partnering with Kenya in other projects,” he said.
The construction of the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital began in 2012 and it will officially be opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta in August this year.
