NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 4 – A Non-Governmental Organisation associated with Rosemary Odinga – daughter to NASA flag bearer Raila Odinga – has been deregistered by the Non-Governmental Organisation Coordination Board and its account frozen with Sh70 million.
In a letter obtained by Capital FM News, NGO Coordination Board Executive Director Fazul Mahamed wrote to the chairperson of Key Empowerment Foundation to say the NGO has been officially deregistered.
“Your Organisation has breached the provisions of Section 12(4) read together with regulation 13 and clause 10 of the terms and conditions attached to your certificate of registration by opening and operating unauthorised bank accounts,” the letter reads in part.
Mahamed’s letter continues: “Your organisation is involved in political activities contrary to the provisions of the Act and Regulations.”
Rosemary has also been accused of “operating an illegal bank account titled ‘Payment of NASA Presidential Agents ‘ with a city bank contrary to the provisions of the Act and its attendant regulations: The Central Bank of Kenya is hereby advised to freeze the said account with immediate effect,” the letter says.
On Tuesday, the board wrote to the Central Bank of Kenya Governor, Patrick Njuguna and The Director of the Financial Reporting Centre asking them to discredit accounts under the name of Rosemary’s NGO saying they suspect the funding is illegal.
But in a quick rejoinder, on Wednesday, the Odinga family through Odinga’s Communication Director Dennis Onyango said the NGO was yet to be registered even after meeting all the needed requirements.
“Without the certificate of registration, there is no way we could receive money because of the absence of a bank account,” said Onyango.
Mahamed later released the certificate of registration showing that the NGO was registered on February 15, 2016.
Onyango had challenged Mahamed to produce the letter.
