Girl arrested in Msando probe after phone link

The detention for a period of seven days will enable detectives finalise their investigation/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 24 – A girl, 17, whose phone was allegedly used to send threatening messages to former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission ICT boss Chris Msando has been arrested.

Police say the girl was arrested in Awendo, Migori County.

“She is in custody at Muthaiga Police Station,” a senior detective privy to the investigations told Capital FM News.

She was brought to Nairobi where she appeared before the Kiambu Juvenile Court and was remanded in police custody.

The detention for a period of seven days will enable detectives finalise their investigation.

The brother, David Otieno, says his Class 7 sister was picked up from their Awendo home by police officers at 5am on Wednesday morning, who initially said they were looking for a “stolen phone.”

“They told my mother that they were taking her to Kisii but later called and said she has been taken to Nairobi,” Otieno said.

According to the 32-year-old brother, the minor has been booked as a “murder suspect.”

“She is only crying there…she doesn’t know anything. We all knew there was someone like him after he was killed,” he said. “It is not fair for the police to detain my sister yet she is young.”

“She is young and it is not like my sister was Msando’s girlfriend.”

– Registered SIM card using mothers ID –

According to Otieno, the sister registered her SIM card using the mother’s Identity Card.

“Unless someone else used her phone, my sister would never do that,” a visibly distressed Otieno told Capital FM News on Thursday.

He was brutally murdered alongside a 21-year-old girl who spent the last moments with him.
