Speaking at a special prayer session for the commission held at the Bomas of Kenya, he warned the IEBC staff not fall into the temptation to gain the whole world but lose their soul/FILE
Nairobi, Kenya, Aug 6 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair Wafula Chebukati has pleaded with the IEBC staff to remain impartial during the elections.
Speaking at a special prayer session for the IEBC staff held at the Bomas of Kenya, he warned them not fall into the temptation ‘to gain the whole world but lose their soul.’
Quoting the bible from the book of Mark 8:36, he urged the IEBC staff to stay truthful to their calling pleading with them to keep off the temptations of wanting to bungle the elections for their selfish gains.
“This is to the staff of IEBC. Why do you want to lose your soul for doing what you have been told not to do? We have trained you. We have told you expectations of IEBC,” he said.
“Keep off the small little things, the temptations of life. Why should you lose your soul because you want to help somebody from your clan? Why should you lose your soul because you want to benefit some material things of the world,” Chebukati added.
He however clarified that majority of IEBC staff are honest people and he had faith in them. He only fired warning to a poisoned small fraction who might attempt mischief on the day and promised that they will be dealt with according to the law.
“As IEBC, I know our staff are committed but of course there is always the little portion that is not and this message is for those who feel like they still want to fall into temptation,” he warned.
The tough talking Chebukati promised to unleash consequences as provided for in the law for any staff member of the IEBC who might fall into the temptation of ruining the credibility of the August 8th polls.
“As a referee, the whistle is ready. We have the yellow card and red card in the pocket. We don’t want to use the cards, but if need be, we shall use them,” he said.
He reminded the staff who had attended the prayer session that they have a sacred duty to the nation that should not be treated casually.
“Why do you want to lose your soul and yet you know very well that you have a responsibility and a duty to this nation?” he asked the attentive staff.
He further affirmed that as a referee the commission is committed to giving Kenyans a free, fair and credible election come the 8th of August this year.
“Mine is to say that as a referee, we are committed to giving Kenyans a free, fair and credible election come the 8th of August this year. And this we say without any fear of contradiction,” Chebukati quipped.
The prayer meeting was attended by among others the Vice chair of the commission Consolata Nkatha, Roselyne Akombe among others.
Religious leaders present prayed for peace and credible elections.
