August polls must go on as planned – Magara

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 10 – Kisii senatorial hopeful vying on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ticket, Omingo Magara has joined a cohort of leaders led by President Uhuru Kenyatta in cautioning the Judiciary not to compromise its integrity as the country heads towards the polls in 28 days time.

The former South Mugirango lawmaker said that the Judiciary and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEBC) must ensure that the elections go on as planned.

“It worries some of us who have been preparing for the elections; we cannot be able to be held in suspense that we might not be able to go to elections or not. The elections must be held as per the constitution, short of that we are preparing for a constitutional crisis that we cannot be able to handle,” said Magara during an interview with Capital FM News.

Magara said that Kenyans are prepared to go to the ballot and hence tasked the electoral agency and the Judiciary not to deny Kenyans their constitutional right to vote on August 8, 2017.

“We cannot wait not to have elections beyond 8 of August, and any attempts to do that we are actually injuring Kenyans’ aspirations and therefore the courts needs to act right and IEBC must not be comfortable assuming that they are going to go scot free if the process is not transparent,” said Magara.

Magara was responding to a court order asking IEBC not to proceed with the printing of the presidential ballot papers on grounds that there was no sufficient public participation.

On Friday, the High Court quashed the award of the tender for printing of presidential ballot papers to Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing Company.

President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto on Sunday during a rally in Baringo County accused the courts of getting involved in Opposition’s bid to delay the August 8 elections.
