NKUBU, Kenya, Jun 23 – President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in the vote-rich Meru County on Friday at the start of a three-day campaign blitz showcasing his administration’s investment and arguing why he must be allowed a second term.

In a trip also designed to win votes for the Jubilee team in Meru, President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto began their day at Igoji, where they made clear they were tied at the hip with the people of Meru.

Thousands of supporters filled the campaign trail, forcing the President to make a number of unscheduled stops to acknowledge them and speak to them.

“We want to continue the work we are doing. But we also want you to give us a strong Jubilee team led by (Aspirant) Governor Kiraitu Murungi,” President Kenyatta said at Igoji, setting the tone for the Meru campaign.

The President arrived from Nyeri County, where his message urging election of all Jubilee candidates was warmly received.

President Kenyatta cited construction of new roads – including one he launched on Friday – and rehabilitation of old ones in Meru and other parts of the country as one of the key areas where his administration has focused to lift the lives of Kenyans.

“We have invested heavily in infrastructure because it is the driver of economic growth and a key plank of our transformational agenda. That is why we have implemented these projects across the country,” President Kenyatta said.

The President’s meet-the-people tour in county, which is one of his strongholds, will take him virtually through all of Meru County. He is also due to meet youth leaders and hold discussions with local leaders.

The President urged Meru residents to remain united behind Jubilee to allow the Government continue with its transformational development work across the country.

“My focus is peace and unity for progress and our aim is to ensure every Kenyan wherever they are feel safe and are not discriminated against,” President Kenyatta said/PSCU

President Kenyatta said his administration had initiated the construction of several roads covering a stretch of 350 kilometres in Meru County over the past four years, some of which are already complete while others are at different stages of completion.

The national Government has set aside over Sh21 billion for construction of new roads and improvement of the transport infrastructure in the County. Out of that amount, Sh7.5 billion is being used on new roads, Sh5 billion to renovate old ones while another lot is under procurement at a cost of Sh9 billion.

The President said his Government has kept its promise to improve infrastructure and invest in projects that are changing Kenya for the better.

“I am seeking a second term so that we can continue building on the development we have already implemented in the last four years,” said the President.

In addition to the huge investments the Government has made in various sectors of the economy to lift the lives of Kenyans, President Kenyatta spoke of further steps to empower the youth.

He said his administration has been committed to deliver progress for all 45 million Kenyans unlike the opposition who are dividing country with their focus on only 10 million Kenyans.

“My focus is peace and unity for progress and our aim is to ensure every Kenyan wherever they are feel safe and are not discriminated against,” President Kenyatta said.

The President singled out installation of modern medical equipment in two top hospitals in every county, construction of roads, provision of free maternity and Nation Hospital Insurance Fund medical cover for a year for mother and child upon delivery in public health facilities as some of the Jubilee Government’s achievement.

Deputy President Ruto asked Meru residents to reject opposition’s attempts to derail ongoing development by turning out in large numbers to vote for Jubilee in the August 8 polls.

President Kenyatta and DP Ruto were also accompanied by Meru leaders, including Senator Kiraitu Murungi, Women Representative Florence Kajuju, Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi and his Igembe South counterpart Mithika Linturi.
